The Possibilities

FOR POETS WORKING 1 : 1

In general, I have four types of sessions to offer. The most productive trimesters will focus on one of these options specifically, though many writers prefer a blend of all four. For example, I’ve had success with writers who want to spend the first half of the session discussing a published collection and the second half looking at two of their new drafts or revisions. We’ll discuss your goals for each trimester in finer detail at our first meeting of the term.

The Scholar

THIS POET:

  • is interested in reading poetry collections and individual poems together

  • is hoping to study interviews with poets and articles on craft

  • is looking to sharpen ideas around voice, tone, aesthetics, and more

  • mostly wants me to wear my teacher hat

How do I get started?

The Public Poet

THIS POET:

  • wants to discover publishing opportunities & be held accountable for submitting

  • wants to “attend” readings and events

  • is eager to discuss the role of social media, writing book reviews, conducting interviews, etc. in the life of a public poet

  • mostly wants me to wear my coach hat

The Space Carver

THIS POET:

  • does not have a lot of time to write outside of our sessions

  • looks forward to the close reading of two or three published poems together

  • is prepared to free write based on prompts generated from those poems during our session

  • will have notes for poems or first drafts to take away with them, so that should they find themselves with writing time during the week, they won’t be staring at a blank page.

The Revisor

THIS POET:

  • looks forward to feedback on working drafts

  • is interested in process as well as product

  • is looking to deepen their own gut instincts around revising their poems

  • mostly wants me to wear my editor hat

Poetry Cohorts

SMALL GROUPS

I curate small communities of poets (4-6 poets per group) who meet once a month to cultivate community, discuss published texts, share resources, and do some light workshopping. We read collections together and, on occassion, invite the authors to join us for interview sessions. Sometimes I create micro classes around topics the cohort agrees are important.

These are tiny communities of poets that 1) work well together 2) build trust easily 3) are vulnerable with one another and 4) have something in common thematically or aesthetically.
